"Astronomers
say the universe is finite, which is a comforting thought for those
people who can't remember where they leave things."
It
all began when my dad took me to see my first ever movie, Star
Wars, in 1977. After that, I devoured any other sci-fi type TV
shows, movies, and books I could find. But when my mom, my sister,
and I moved to rural Montana...our television reception was very poor
and we could only get the local public TV channel. Needless to say,
I didn't get to see many sci-fi shows after that. I did go to see
movies whenever I could and saw films like Spaceballs, Bladerunner,
and E.T.. I also loved to read sci-fantasy books like The
Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkein and The Riddle-Master of
Hed series by Patricia A. McKillip.
But no matter how
I managed to get my sci-fi fix, I can't escape the fact that during
my TV-deprived years, I missed out on the reruns of the mother of
all sci-fi shows...Star Trek. I had no idea what it was until I
started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. To put it mildly, I
went crazy! I fell in love with the Star
Trek universe. Now I keep pretty busy...I watch reruns of the original
series, ST:TNG, ST:
Deep Space 9, and ST:
Voyager. I am a member of a great online Voyager group:
- Robert Beltran Estrogen
Brigade. Based
on the the other *brigades*, this is a mailing list for women who
love all things about the USS Voyager's First Officer, Chakotay, and
the man who played him, Robert Beltran.
Two members of the
RBEB started the The
Official Robert Beltran Website. This page is run with Robert's permission
and is quite the fancy page to visit. Check it out!
Two
years ago I discovered Farscape. My friend sent me 13 eps on
tape, which I promptly shelved due to lack of time, but then with no
job and little to do but look for a new job and read books, I got out
the Farscape eps and began watching. I watched all 13 eps in
two days and called my friend and begged for more. I'm completely hooked.
There's lots of sexual tension in this show, and where the X-Files Mulder
and Scully leave off with the subtext and the just plain not admitting
the truth, John and Aeryn pick up with overt interest in each other
and lots of chemistry. But that's not all, the chemistry between the
whole crew is astounding. Farscape quickly became my favorite show on
TV, right there with Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Unfortunately,
the SciFi channel cancelled
the show, a shortsighted and completely money based decision. The fans
are fighting to increase interest and viewership in the show and were
recently rewarded with the filming of a soon-to-be-aired miniseries.
Please check out our Save
Farscape website. Here's where I've been spending all my Farscape
time online:
- Farscape
Fantasy, a great site done by Dallascaper with endless episode
information and music videos created by fans.
- Karlsweb,
a great place for spoilers, pictures of the actors before and after
makeup and costume design hints.
About six years ago, I started watching Buffy, The Vampire Slayer.
This was a cult, campy show when I started watching it, but then became
a full-blown hit. The vampire effects look wonderful. The show originally
built off of the unresolved sexual tension between Buffy (the slayer)
and Angel (her vampire boyfriend), but Angel fled to Los Angeles after
season 3. Buffy's had a few other romances in the years, but last year
hooked up with another member of the undead, Spike, her once arch-enemy.
And damned if Spike doesn't look great pretty much naked. Anyway, Spike
went and got his soul back thinking that was what Buffy wanted and promptly
went a bit insane with guilt. The entire gang fought off the "big
bad" during the final season. Buffy admitted she loved Spike,
Spike died to save the world, Willow tapped into magical powers beyond
this realm and became a God and just as Xander and Anya were working
out there issues, Anya was killed. It was a great show and sorely
missed, however, it lives on in DVD. I've found two really great
Buffy sites:
As
many of you know, Angel is the TV spin-off of Buffy.
This show is just as good as Buffy. Angel is living in Los Angeles trying
to ease his guilt over being such a mean, evil vamp by saving poor down-trodden
Angelinos. I might have made it sound really corny, but trust me the
show is great! He runs into Cordelia (another Buffy alum), who
is there trying to begin her acting career. Angel and Cordelia
were initially helped by Wesley Wyndam Price, rogue demon hunter (and
Buffy's former watcher) and Gunn, a local dude with a big grudge against
the sunlight challenged. Then Angel went to Pylea, another dimension,
and found Fred and she joined the group. With the final episodes of
Angel upon us, the gang runs the evil law firm, Wolfram and Hart, but
are trying to use the resources available to them to thwart the evil
W & H sanctions. Cordelia is gone, Fred is dead, but still
among them as a demon without a home, and Spike, killed in the Buffy
finale, was resurrected to fight the good fight with Angel. Though,
admittedly, I haven't browsed many Angel site's I have found a couple
of good ones:
No
list of my favorite sci-fi shows would be complete without Roswell.
I originally watched this to see how much of it was going to be based
on (or just taken straight from) the X-Files. And I have to tell
you, I was pleasantly surprised. I watched for all three years and am
really sad this show was cancelled. DVD's are finally being released
though, so I'm having a joyous time watching episodes all over again.
I don't know how much longer these links will be working, but
my favorite
links are:
- Roswell:
Crashdown. This is a great site, with lots of photos, and even
pictorials of the eps.
- Leaving
Normal which is a great place for spoilers and unique photes of
the cast.
I also loved The
X-Files. My husband introduced me to this show (he now says he regrets
it deeply) and with one episode, I was hooked. The show finished it's
ninth season last year with David Duchovny showing up for the final
episode. Since seasons 7 and 8 greatly disappointed me, I decided not
to watch the last year, but I will always love this show, if only for
the first five seasons which were top rate. I have every one of those
episodes, but a couple on tape. I'm a sucker for the chemistry between
Mulder and Scully and would have been happy if the end of season 8 was
the end of the series....what a great ending. I did belong to tons of
XF groups, but found my niche...and now only belong to one group.

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
